Jeopardy in real life

Posted in TV on September 22nd, 2005 by Chris

Many of you will remember my scathing comments about the game show Jeopardy (September 1).  “Oh, man,” you’re thinking, “were those comments ever scathing!”  Well they were certainly scathing, there’s no doubt about it.  I was scathing all over Jeopardy.  When I got done with it, Jeopardy was so freaking scathed…

Okay, I have used the word ’scathing’ so much now that it has lost all meaning, not that it had all that much to begin with, so I am now going to quit using it.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I like the show Jeopardy; if I didn’t I wouldn’t've bothered to write about all the things that inspire such, uh, scathingness.  And to be fair, my point-of-view is that of the casual Jeopardy viewer, just an average guy of average intelligence.   (Perhaps I flatter myself.)  But I have no inside knowledge of the workings of game shows or what is involved in the production of a television program such as Jeopardy.

Would seeing the show from a different perspective, from that of a participant, an insider, someone behind-the-scenes, CHANGE my opinions about Jeopardy?  In short, what if I saw Jeopardy live, as it was being recorded?  Would I be less critical then?

Well let me tell you.

No.

New Brunswick, NJ

We did!  We were greeted upon check-in by a small delightful foreign person, I would guess Indian or Pakistani, whose grasp of the English language was tenuous at best!  Of course the Howard Johnson corporation shrewdly decided that the ideal placement for an employee such as this would be in a front-line position, greeting and providing customer service and hospitality to primarily English-speaking customers.  We took part in a surprisingly lengthy conversation in which my girlfriend tried to convey the deceptively simple idea, “We are going to stay with my parents who are already checked in.” Read more »

Where I work I park in a parking deck. Parking in a parking deck is a great thing, at least as far as parking places go.    Excuse me, my eye is twitching.

Jeopardy

Posted in TV on September 1st, 2005 by Chris

I think today I will talk about Jeopardy. I have nothing else to talk about.

Okay, first and foremost, Alex never shoulda lost the mustache.  Yes, maybe it was very early-80’s-porn-star, but without it he just looks…I dunno.  That was a big mistake.  It’s kinda like Tom Selleck shaving his mustache (only not nearly as significant in the grand scheme of things of course).  Okay, I’m used to it now, but still, that was like Tom’s trademark, and directly after he shaved it off he got lousy movie parts like having to kiss Kevin Kline on the mouth for a good ten seconds.  Is that not a sign from God?  I couldn’t ask for a clearer one.  “I have to kiss Kevin Kline?  Okay, THAT does it.” *throwing away electric razor*
